CRPD Added Value? -Seminar in Helsinki

VIKE is organizing an International Seminar on the Implications of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - with Special Focus on Disability in Development; on 20.-21.5.2008 in Helsinki (Fair Center  / Hotel Holiday Inn Helsinki). The seminar will be held in English and the translation into Finnish will be available.
Backround of VIKE Seminar

After the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006 the world is waiting. What will be the implications of the new convention and what can we all do to make the life of persons with disabilities more respectful around the world?

The special focus of the seminar is on the situation of persons with disabilities living in the developing countries. Does international cooperation guaranteed in CRPD have a role in the development of these countries? How about human rights based approaches, does CRPD help in elaborating those?

These are some of the questions that the Seminar: “CRPD - Added Value?” adresses. By organizing this seminar, The Center for Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities (VIKE) wants to increase the level of knowledge on CRPD and, through that, contribute to the better realization of human rights of persons with disabilities.

Minister of Justice of Finland, Ms. Tuija Brax, will open the seminar. The keynote speaker of the seminar is Professor Michael Stein, Executive Director of the Harvard Project on Disability in USA. Professor Stein is an internationally recognized disability rights expert, who participated in the drafting of a United Nations disability human rights treaty. The main speaker from Finland is Mr. Martin Scheinin, Professor of Constitutional and International Law and the Director of the Institute for Human Rights, Åbo Akademi University. Other speakers include: Ms. Jarna Petman - Senior Lecturer in International Law in Helsinki University, Mr. Ronald Wiman - Senior Social Development Advisor for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Tuija Halmari - Executive
Director of Finnish Disabled People’s International Development Association, FIDIDA. In addition to this we will have many other speakers who will have the opportunity to bring their own view to the discussion.

The seminar is open to all actors in the field. Especially persons with disabilities, organizations of persons with disabilities, government representatives, researchers, students, and other persons interested in the situation and rights of persons with disabilities, are warmly welcomed to participate. The seminar will be held in English and the translation into Finnish will be available.
